CONSCIOUSNESS IS THE CONDITION in which all of our self-referential stories arise — where they appear to enduringly (for a time) reside. Consciousness, in its quick and deft weaving of moments and appearances, seems to hold our stories of self within it as fact, as reality. It provides the climate from which subjective experience can arise.

We can pause here for a few minutes, if you like, and see what self-referential narratives we hold to be true, to be accurate accounts of who we are and how things are. We want to look at the “stories” of our lives, the stories ego tells. These are our stories of explanation, justification, shame, blame, pride, and disappointment. Our narratives come in every flavor. Just note the different ones that have become refrains in the decades of your life.

Take some time to do this deliberately, intently.

Note the flavor and the feeling tone of each narrative, noting particularly each of the highlighted moments that appear to justify the narrative. These are the qualities we believe define us. We can ask what thoughts are firing in this moment? What thoughts fuel the rutted narrative? How is this narrative sustaining the “I”-thought? How is it assenting to ignorance?

Having noted the narratives, note how they ignore whatever insights and revelations we’ve been blessed to receive. Note how they turn us away from the light and back into the shadow of self. Note what power we’ve given them. And rest in the awareness that — beyond the stories — is noting the stories. Rest in awareness for a while, refreshing your being.
